It may not slip discretely beneath your dress shirt cuff, but the CX Swiss Military Watch model called 20,000 Feet is what you will want on your wrist the next time you dive to 6,000 meters. The watch will also come in handy if you plan on standing directly next to a large explosion, or if you need something that will stand up to a 12 gauge Winchester shotgun at close range… and there are videos to prove it.
As recognized by the Guinness Book of Records, the 20,000 Feet is the only mechanical timepiece certified to a depth of, well, 20,000 feet. For most watch companies, that Guinness Book entry would probably be enough. Fortunately for entertainment-starved watch junkies, the Swiss manufacturer Montres Charmex goes several steps further to prove its timepiece is tough. The brand has produced a series of short videos (with the CEO as presenter) that answer the question “What do you get if you cross an old Timex ‘It takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin” commercial with an episode of Mythbusters?” In one video, the 20,000 Feet is strapped to a metal pole and subjected to 3 close-range blasts from a 12 gauge Winchester shotgun. Amazingly, the crystal does not break and the watch, though dented, keeps ticking. A competitor’s watch, certified to only 1,000 meters, receives the same treatment and, as you might guess, ends up well ventilated.
In another video set in a quarry, the 20,000 Feet and a competitor’s watch are placed about 12 inches away from a powerful explosive charge. Following the blast, the 20,000 Feet is in one piece and still ticking. The bracelet even remains attached. The competitor’s watch on the other hand obeys the laws of physics and is blown to smithereens.
The 20,000 feet will be produced in a limited series of 1,000 pieces – 250 in each of 4 dial colors. Complete details appear below the images. The recommended retail price for the 20,000 Feet in Switzerland, including 7.6% VAT, is SFr. 3,995. The videos can be viewed free of charge at www.20000feet.com.
